Book Review – The Secrets of Sunshine by Phaedra Patrick
Mitchell Fisher is carrying an emotional lump of grief around with him daily. Raising his daughter alone now after his partner was killed in an accident has turned his world upside down. It is almost like a cage around his heart, he doesn’t want to feel, hear or see love anywhere. The only reason he is still managing to exist every day is Poppy his little girl. She is the bright shining light that keeps him going.
Mitchell’s day job is to remove the padlocks that people have secured to the bridges in his town. The weight of the locks is hazardous to the bridge and so every day he goes and cuts them off. On an ordinary day, something happens that changes the course of his life forever.
I loved the padlock aspect of the story, we have many bridges in my home town of Musselburgh and they have padlocks on them. I saw them as recent as two weeks ago when I went for a walk. I have often thought what the story was behind each lock and what made people leave them there.
The Secret of Sunshine is an easy read but it packs a punch with emotional content.
I really liked the characters, they were relatable and people who would live on your street. There is a lot of takeaway from the book, life lessons if you like.
I would definitely read more from Phaedra Patrick.
The Secrets of Sunshine by Phaedra Patrick
Only his daughter Poppy knows that behind his prickly exterior, Mitchell Fisher is deeply lonely. He may have sworn off romance, relishing his job cutting off the padlocks that couples fasten to his hometown’s famous ‘love story’ bridge… but underneath it all, he’s still grieving the loss of Poppy’s mum.
Then one hot summer’s day, everything changes when Mitchell bravely rescues a woman who falls from the bridge into the river. He’s surprised to feel an unexpected connection to her, but then she disappears. Desperate to find the mysterious woman, Mitchell teams up with her spirited sister Liza to see if she’s left any clues behind. There’s just one – a secret message on the padlock she left on love story bridge…
