You’ll Never See Me Again by Lesley Pearse
Betty is running for her life . . .
Young Betty dreams of settling down to an ordinary life with her husband. But when he returns broken and haunted from the Great War, she finds herself persecuted by his distraught mother – and yearns to escape.
It is only when a storm devastates the village that Betty sees her chance. Fleeing to Bristol and changing her name to Mabel Brook, she seeks a new life – only to discover destiny has other plans.
Penniless and alone, Mabel suffers a brutal attack before being rescued by a psychic named Nora Nightingale. She gets her first taste of those who receive messages from the dead and realizes she may have this power herself.
But Mabel fears her gift may be a terrible curse as it becomes ever harder to hide from the truth about who she once was – and the tragic life she left behind.
Soon Mabel receives her own message and is forced back to the very place she has escaped. A place of heartbreak and perhaps even murder – but to secure her future Mabel must confront her past one last time.

Book Review by Kelly Lacey
The adventure begins in Hallsands, Devon in 1917. We meet Betty Wellows a young feisty newlywed who’s husband, Martin has returned from war and is consumed with shellshock. He is so trapped in his nightmare that he doesn’t even know who’s around him or what is going on. Being with her nightmare mother in law is daily struggle for poor Betty. On a horrific stormy night, Agnes sends poor Betty out to fetch things from her own home before it is swept away. But as Betty tip toes down the wet path with the rain and wind in her face she begins to think Agnes has sent her right into the path of the storm and that death will find her.
Here is a look at Hallsands, Devon in 1985. It gives you a real feel for the place and you can just visualize little Betty walking up and down that hill.
So she takes a leap and leaves the misery behind saying “You’ll Never See Me Again. There in we follow Betty who is now Mabel on her adventures. The book is so beautifully written. Mabel is so loveable and you champion her right right from the start. I felt like I was living beside Mabel as she endured life’s challenges.
I cried alongside Mabel many times and for me that is the sign of a superb read. If I can connect with the characters and when they mean something to me. Ms Pearse is truly talented in setting the scene and making these fictional characters so real. I also love the way that Ms Pearse includes details of the food the characters are eating and the clothes they are wearing. It really helps you to create the scene in your head as you read. Mabel meets a whole host of memorable folks on her journey. One in particular who really made me very emotional.
I am hoping that this book is the start of a series, with so many lovely characters I am not quite ready to say goodbye to them.
