💫 Welcome to Love Books Group Blog

Today I review Winters by Lisa Gabriele. Published by Harvill Secker in 2018.

💫Back of the Book

An addictively suspenseful new novel set in the glamorous world of the New York Hamptons, about secrets that refuse to remain buried and consequences that cannot be escaped.

After a whirlwind romance, a young woman returns to the opulent, secluded mansion of her new fiancé Max Winter – a wealthy senator and recent widower – and a life of luxury she’s never known. But all is not as it appears at the Asherley estate. The house is steeped in the memory of Max’s beautiful first wife Rebekah, who haunts the young woman’s imagination and feeds her uncertainties, while his very alive teenage daughter Dani makes her life a living hell.

As the soon-to-be second Mrs. Winter grows more in love with Max, and more afraid of Dani, she is drawn deeper into the family’s dark secrets – the kind of secrets that could kill her, too.

Inspired by the classic novel Rebecca, The Winters is a riveting story about what happens when a family’s ghosts resurface and threaten to upend everything.

The Winter’s by Lisa Gabriele is loosely based on Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier. Which I have never read and I didn’t know the story. So I can’t do a reflective comparison of the books. But I can tell you about my journey with it.

The story begins in the hot sunshine of the Cayman islands, where a hardworking young women falls for the rich handsome Mr Winters. After a short dalliance he whisks her away into his world in New York.

A beautiful home with so many many secrets. With reminders of his dead wife Rebecca everywhere and a troubled stepdaughter, she struggles to find her place in this strange family. When things start to unravel, we don’t know who she can really trust.

I really enjoyed everything about the book, the writing is beautiful the pace is perfect. I love that the main character doesn’t really have an identity . I was surprised by ending as all my guess work was very wrong.

Lisa Gabriele is an author who I would love to read more from.

Like a jigsaw puzzle, Lisa Gabriele lets you piece together the pieces and you feel satisfied that you know what’s going on then she tips the table and you are left flabbergasted!
