Can her first love save her life and heal her heart?

Joey made a vow never to return home, but then his brother is murdered. His boss needs him on a critical case in Seattle, yet his honed detective instincts tell him whoever killed his brother is part of something more sinister than the Elkridge deputies can handle. There’s just one problem—going home means seeing Mara. The girl he’s never forgotten and the one he’s loved since high school. However, there’s something he doesn’t know, something big.

Mara had big dreams. Taking over a neglected small town flower shop wasn’t one of them. Neither was losing her parents and her independence. She’s trying to make the best of life, but weird things are happening in town, and she can’t shake the feeling of being watched. Her world tilts even more when Joey unexpectedly arrives—her first love and the man who broke her heart.

Why did he come back now, now when she’s so broken?
How can he leave when those he loves need protecting?

 ♥  Book Review

The first thing I thought after starting to read Blinded, book one in Lyz Kelley’s Elkridge series, was that I now had more books I just had to read! I’m rarely a series reader; I’m just too distracted to commit for more than short periods of time. But Blinded caught me up immediately. Ms. Kelley writes such strong characters and plots, and includes an underlying mystery that makes me want to be in for the long haul. I mean, really, I have to know what happened to Sam!

Blinded is exactly what I want on my reading shelf. The characters are real, which means they aren’t some superheroes that I will never actually meet. They are, as Ms. Kelley’s tagline states, Everyday Heroes. Blinded, on the literal side, is titled for the main character, Mara, who is blinded in an accident that killed more than half of her family. Ms. Kelley writes about Mara’s experience in a sensitive and empowering way. The reader knows that Mara is way more capable than she originally gives herself to be. More metaphorically, the title also implies how life will come at you without you ever seeing it coming. This speaks for the positive as well as the negative. Joey and Mara’s reunion is not something either of them expected, neither is the death of Joey’s brother. The core, sweet and sexy love story of Mara and Joey is completed in this book; each of the Elkridge books can be read as stand alones. The underlying mystery of what happened to Joey’s brother, Sam, is what ties six books in the series together. In that way, this series is reminiscent of The Seven Sisters series by Lucinda Riley. There are an additional three books set in Elkridge as a part of the Lonely Ridge collection. Like I said, I am going to be a busy reader!

Everyday heroes are everywhere. It is lovely to find a book that makes the reader feel like they can be the hero of their own story; that all our stories have a bit of romance, mystery, and heroism about them. Blinded is a book that readers can connect with while still being swept away. Thank you to Lyz Kelley for the privilege of being able to review her book. She too is an Everyday Hero.
