|Synopsis|

Sally Lachlan has a secret that has haunted her for a decade, is it now time to let it go? A chance meeting with the charismatic geneticist, Anthony Blake, reawakens her desire for love and at the same time, her daughter, Charlie, shows signs of wishing to know more about her father. Both the past and the future are places Sally prefers not to think about but if she wants to move towards a new love, she will first have to come to terms with her long-ago marriage. Only then will she be able, to be honest with Charlie. And herself.

The very start of A Perfect Marriage by Alison Booth reminded me of a good old-fashioned radio detective show. You know the kind, “I walk into the room and immediately notice something amiss. Then I see the dame in the corner and I know that my troubles are just starting.” It isn’t that this is Ms. Booth’s writing style. She just sets up a mystery in a way that makes you realize you are in for a ride.

I am not a fan of the abusive husband trope, but it plays out in A Perfect Marriage in a way that is not gratuitous. The story is much more about protagonist Sally Lachlan’s journey to self-acceptance. The other two strong female characters, Sally’s daughter Charlie and friend Zoe add tremendous depth to the story. Add in Tall, Dark, Handsome and Sweet Anthony Blake and A Perfect Marriage becomes A Perfect Novel!

The novel bounces back and forth from “Then” to “Now” which I love as a reader. As a writer, I know how difficult this can be to coordinate and flow. Ms. Booth does a great job with the pace and the transitions, sometimes showing the same scene over again with only a few hours difference in perspective – some earlier, some later. This brings the reader even deeper into the plot and makes the pages keep turning.

You may think you have a feeling for what is going to happen, but trust me, you won’t know what really happened until the end. Ms. Booth makes you earn that, and it is well worth the price.
