Flashdance The Musical

The Playhouse, Edinburgh

Flashdance Overview

Flashdance – The Musical is the inspiring and unforgettable story of Alex a determined welder who dreams of becoming a professional dancer.  When a romance complicates her ambitions, she harnesses it to drive her dream of attending Shipley Dance Academy.

Prepare to be blown away by an astonishing musical spectacle with phenomenal choreography to this iconic score including the smash hits Maniac, Gloria, I Love Rock & Roll and of course the sensational title track Flashdance… What a Feeling.

Sparks will fly and you’ll dance like you’ve never danced before!

Review

First theatre show of the year for us to review and delighted that it’s a musical at the beautiful Playhouse, Edinburgh.

Flashdance the movie is a huge favourite of mine and I was interested to see how well it moved from screen to stage.  The show stays quite close to the original screenplay and although well executed I felt somewhat deflated that the key songs such as Gloria, Maniac and What a Feeling, felt somewhat rushed.

Carol Ball as Hannah and Demmileigh Foster as Tess, stole the show. Demmileigh’s I love Rock and Roll number was the hit of the night. The dancing was on point and she was able to encompass the energy and playfulness that was needed.  Carol Ball had the audience in the palm of her hand and I wish there had been more scenes with her wonderful acting.

A few technical issues throughout the opening night did not hinder the cast and they followed through with determination. I left the theatre on a high. The show most definitely has the feel-good factor.  Grab your friends and head to the theatre to see Flashdance. Be introduced or reminisce about the 80’s music and the fashion.
