Detective Galbraith does not sit in his office. That is off limits to him now. Ask a few simple questions and the whole world went mad. It’s the holidays, he tells himself, makes people act funny. So he sits on a sofa, in his not spacious flat, in front of the coffee table. On the corner sits a class of whisky. His notes from the waitress are spread across the rest of it. Except for the space immediately in front of him, which is occupied by a blank notebook.

He sketches out a table and adds in what he knows. Mrs Claus was sitting in the seat on the left and next to her sat the person in the blue party hat. The person in the middle chair drank spiced apple.

Galbraith consults his notes. The green hat was to the left of the purple hat. No one sat to Mrs Claus’s left so she can’t have had the purple hat and the blue hat was to her right, so she can’t have had the green either. And the elf was in the red hat. So she must have had the yellow. And the person in the yellow hat didn’t eat gravy.

The person in the green hat was next to the person who didn’t want gravy. Galbraith scores out the clue and writes down the note in his table. If the person in the middle chair drank spiced apple, and the person who had the green hat drank sherry, and the green hat was to the left of the purple hat, then the green hat must have been in the fourth chair, with sherry, and the purple hat must have been in the fifth. Meaning the Elf with his red had was in the middle.

Galbraith is getting excited now, and he takes another joyous sip. Confident now, that had not been the underage Elf’s drink on Christmas Eve. The one who didn’t want sprouts also drank beer, which can only mean they were in seats two or five. So the only possible beverages for house one are mulled wine or whisky. Wait, Santa drank whisky! Mrs Claus drank the mulled wine.

Which means that the person who didn’t want cranberry sauce must have been in the second house. And the red party popper must have been in the first or second house.

Since Santa drank whisky he can only have been in seat two or five. Rudolf’s front and back half could each be in seat two, four or five.

The pen drops against the table and the glass is lifted from its corner and his fingers rub across his forehead.

If the beer and no sprouts can only be in the second or fifth house, but no cranberry sauce is in the second then it has to be in the fifth. So two has to be the whisky and Santa!

Rudolf’s front half had extra pork, so he can’t be in the fifth chair, so he needs to be in the fourth, next to the Elf. Leaving Rudolf’s back half in the fifth chair. And Rudolf’s Back had the blue party popper.

That only leaves one place for the mashed potatoes. The Elf had those. Whoever had the mashed potatoes also had the yellow party popper. So Mrs Claus had to have had the red party popper.

Which can only mean one thing.?

The murderer was Rudolf’s front half, in the fourth seat, who drank sherry and ate extra pork crackling and had the purple party popper.

  1. The way I saw it was that Mrs Claus was at No 5 with no one to HER left, not our left as we look at the table. Still, it got the brain cells working. Thanks Linden and Love Books group for the entertainment. 😀
