A ‘bookish’ post…
“I’ve always wanted to write a novel…” How many times do we hear that statement? I can’t count the number of times I have uttered it in my life. When asked, “So what stops you?” I would shy away or mutter something inaudible about not having enough time. But the truth is, I was scared.
Scared of being laughed at. Scared of being told that my work was no good.
School was a very unhappy place for me and when I look back, I know that I never realised my potential academically during those years. The only thing I loved was English and that I credit to a teacher, who created a world of language and books that I could escape into and feel safe. Years later, I retrained and got my act together in my working life but a career in the hospitality industry had begun and writing was never an option. Or so I thought.
Five years ago, I made the decision to glue my rear to a chair and sit at my lap top and find every available hour that I could to write a novel. It wasn’t easy. I had so many demands on my time from a stressful job, caring for an elderly parent, family duties and so on. But I made time early mornings, late-nights, weekends – any spare hour that I could grab. Eventually my debut, Coffee Tea The Gypsy & Me, was born. After months of frustrating rejections, I self-published and watched it fly to number three in women’s fiction on Amazon and become E-book of the Week in The Sun. Five years on I am signed to a brilliant publisher and my fifth book will be out soon. I am doing something that I truly love and writing is, most definitely for me.
If you want to do something and live your dream you can and will find a way, no matter how long it takes.
