Today on Love Books Group Blog, Elaine Chissick is here with our Favourite Five feature. Elaine’s book Tie’s That Harm is out now in eBook and physical copy.
Alexandra’s life is an ongoing rollercoaster of love, light and fun. But just one point of weakness at the highest peak, is all it takes to plunge her into a darkness which stops her world turning. And because she’s not the only one to blame for its sudden halt, she has no way of knowing if it will ever turn again.
When past connections become the ties that harm, Alexandra’s worst nightmare becomes an unwanted reality that, regardless of the strength of the ties that bind, will test her to the absolute limit.
In this story of betrayal, revenge and deceit, we meet the people in Alexandra and Gabriel’s wider circle of family, friends and colleagues. But who among them has a secret to hide? Who has a confession to make? Who has a past to repair and who will survive the Ties That Harm?
Favourite Five with Elaine Chissick
- What’s your favourite book cover by another author and why?
My favourite book cover has to be from “The Queen and I” by Sue Townsend. I’ve loved Sue’s books since I first read the Adrian Mole Diaries when I was a teenager, but there’s something strangely compelling about a cover showing a Corgi sleeping under the Queen’s ruby red parliamentary robe which is draped over an old clothes horse, drying in front of an old-fashioned council house gas fire complete with a tiled surround!
- What is your favourite time to read?
Before I started writing seriously, I would ready practically anywhere. And if a story grabbed me, then I’d read at any time of the day, the only problem there, is that I’d forget about everything else going on around me and then wonder where the last half a day disappeared to. Since becoming an author, I find that I have less and less time to read, so I grab an hour or so when I can. Usually, just before I go to sleep.
- Do you have a favourite snack to nibble whilst reading?
Not at night, but if I read during the day I love to suck peanuts. And chocolate until it melts in my mouth.
- Who is your favourite book character that has stayed with you long after the book ended?
Probably Adrian Mole. Although I read the diaries when I was a teenager, I still get them out and read them again every so often. And what strikes me, is that each time I read them, I pick up something different from the story. As a teenager, I saw everything from Adrian’s point of view but as an adult, I see the story from the other character’s eyes.
- What is your favourite book quote?
Hmmm. I don’t know. I remember movie quotes more than book quotes, but one that does stand out to me is something from my second fiction. The line is, “you should be used to losing them by now then …”
On its own, it doesn’t convey much but in the context of the story and what was happening, it’s really very harsh. So harsh, that it even made me recoil in horror when I wrote it.
