Q&A With Voinks~ Author of #Changes @olympiapub ~ Novel #Giveaway #Win

Our Q&A

Describe yourself using three words?

Quirky, Unicorn and dragon-lover, (who uses hyphens so she can cheat.)

What inspired you to write your first novel?

A freak accident left me housebound and going stir- crazy, but there’s always a rainbow. It gave me the opportunity to concentrate on writing and get my first book published. Did you know that even with one leg useless you can still do a ‘happy dance’ when you get that ‘We want to publish your book’ letter?

What time of day do you like to write?

Between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. (Perhaps I’m secretly a vampire.)

What is your favourite book and why?

Selfishly, it would have to be my own book because it threw me into the wonderful world of authorism.  Apart from that, I love too many books and authors to be able to choose.

It might have been because of the changes happening in my own life at the time. It became a standing joke as my elderly mother could never remember the title. In despair, I played her David Bowie’s record (assuming she would never have heard of him) to which her response was ‘Changes! Why didn’t you say so?’ and remembered it forever after.

Are the characters in your book based on real people?

I didn’t think they were, but several friends reading it immediately ‘recognised’ various characters.

What’s your favourite word?

‘Antidisestablishmentarianism.’ Not for any political or religious reasons, just a childish delight in the sound of the word. My least favourite is probably ‘just’ as I have a habit of sneaking it in everywhere.

If you were a colour what would it be?

Blue for serenity or mauve for passion, because I’m a bit of both.

Do you plan your story beforehand or go with the flow?

I don’t write my stories, my characters do. As soon as I start writing they take over and fight until my fingers get them down on the page. They don’t plan so I just go with the flow.

Who is your favourite Author?

A terrible admission but I rarely noticed authors’ names, however much I enjoyed their books. I am getting better but read most types of fiction so don’t have a particular favourite, although Jodi Picoult and Stephen King spring to mind. I have a small collection of autographed books by ‘unknown’ Indie authors which I treasure.

If you could give any literary villain a happy ending who would you chose?

Difficult one. Even considering everything from Shakespeare to Harry Potter, and Barabas to Count Dracula didn’t help me make a decision. I’ll go for either TD, one of my own characters, or Celine from Gunshot Glitter by Yasmin Selena Butt.

Are you working on a new project?

My 100,000-word ‘Murder of Changes’ mystery thriller is finished but undergoing its 10-millionth proof read. If I can leave the ‘Procrastinators are us’ group I hope it will be published, either traditionally or by self-publishing, sometime this year. In between I have several other projects on the go; either short stories, competition entries, or learning marketing, formatting and other crafts from online courses.

Do you have any upcoming events our members can attend?

I wish! Due to ‘poor little me’ syndrome, I have difficulty travelling, but if there are any members in South East London who are good at nagging me, it would be a great inspiration to make an event get off the ground. Otherwise, it’s all online
